Why Choose Acupuncture?

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) acupuncture is the most widely practised form of acupuncture. Here are a few reasons why it is so popular..

Effective Acupuncture Based on Individual Assessment

TCM acupuncture is based on a holistic model of health, which means it includes your body, your mind and your lifestyle. Treatment begins with a detailed assessment, asking about your symptoms as well as your medical history, sleep, digestion, energy levels, mood, etc. These details help us understand how well the different systems in your body are working together.

The TCM phrase ‘Same Disease, Different Treatment’ means that a group of people with the same medical diagnosis (back pain, IBS, infertility, etc) may each be treated using a different selection of acupuncture points. This is because each person’s underlying state of health – which may be causing or contributing to the symptom – is unique.

How Acupuncture Works to Treat Illness and Improve Wellbeing

TCM acupuncture works by stimulating the body’s own ability to regulate, repair, and recover. By improving underlying function, treatments often address more than one symptom at the same time, even if they appear unrelated. Many clients notice improvements not only with their symptoms, but in their overall well-being.

Having had a successful course of acupuncture, many clients return for occasional maintenance treatments, to stay well and prevent symptoms recurring. The change of the seasons, for example, is a time when symptoms can (re)appear, such as allergies, low mood, joint pain, cold / flu symptoms.

A Different Approach from Conventional Medicine

Conventional medicine plays an important role in life-threatening illness and emergency care, with treatment usually directed at managing symptoms. However, although medications and other treatments can be effective, they frequently also cause unwanted side-effects which may in turn need further treatment.

Traditional Chinese Medicine acupuncture takes a different approach, aiming to improve overall health and function so that symptoms reduce as a result. Rather than working against the body’s natural functions, acupuncture supports them, which is why its ‘side-effects’ are beneficial rather than unpleasant.
